Amino Acid Metabolism

1. State the requirements for an amino acid to be glucogenic, ketogenic or both.

2. List which amino acids are solely ketogenic.

3. Outline the steps in the metabolism of Phe and Tyr.

4. Identify the reaction catalyzed by phenylalanine hydroxylase, its co-factors and clinical symptoms of its deficiency.

5. Draw the steps in the metabolism of Met and Cys.

6. Identify the intermediate in the conversion of methionine to homocysteine and state its importance.

Protein Synthesis and Maturation

1. Define the terms: genetic code, codon, anticodon, degenaracy, wobble, charged tRNA and translation.

2. List the steps and state the function of amino acid activation.

3. List the types of RNA used in translation and state their functions.

4. State the function of the ribosome in translation and list its major components.

5. Diagram the process of translation.

6. Diagram the process of protein extrusion into the ER.

7. List some antibiotics and toxins that inhibit synthesis.
