Survey of Organic Chemistry Laboratory, CHE 317L

Thursday 1:00-3:50 PM

NSM C-351

1. Co-requisite: enrolment in CHE 316.

2. Required Text: Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques: A Small Scale Approach;  Pavia, Kriz, Lampman & Engel, 2005; ISBN: 0534408338

3. Laboratory Notebook: Your notebook is to be with you at all times in the laboratory.  This is where you record what you have done and all of the data and observations that you take.  The lab notebook is not a lab report.  Lab reports are written separately and the carbons from your notebook are attached to the end of the report.

4. Laboratory Reports: Will be due the Thursday following the conclusion of an experiment (i.e. Simple Distillation Report is Due 2/12).  Each report will be worth 20 pts, for a total of 180 pts from all laboratory experiments (9).  Report must be word-processed. See links on web site for specific instructions on what to include in each report.

5.  Safety:  You must wear approved eye protection, closed toe shoes and a lab coat at all times in the lab.  Failure to do so will result in expulsion from the lab.

6. Practicum: To be discussed later, will be a laboratory test and is worth 100 pts.

7. Quiz: Will cover material from all of the laboratories (100 pts).  We will discuss this as we proceed.  This is not something to worry about, instead concentrate on your laboratory work and subsequent lab reports.

8. Attendance:  You are expected to attend all laboratory sessions.  Make-ups will only be allowed if arrangements are made prior to the missed lab and for good reason.

9. Grading Criteria: Letter grade will be based on the following system. Grades are criterion-referenced not norm-referenced; each student has an equal opportunity meet the criteria charted below:

Lab Reports =180 pts

Practicum = 100 pts

Written Quiz =100 pts

Total = 380 pts

10. Course Description: Techniques of separation and purification of organic compounds.  Introduction to organic synthesis.  Three hours of laboratory per week.

11. The Goal of this course is to conduct organic chemistry experiments.

12. Academic Integrity Statement: A university is a community of learners bonded together by the search for knowledge; the pursuit of personal, social, cultural, physical, and intellectual development; and the desire for the liberating effects of an advanced education.  California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) has a culture--an academic culture--shared with other universities and colleges across the nation.  Integral to that culture is a set of values such as academic freedom, dedication to teaching and learning, diversity, civility toward others, and academic integrity.  Academic integrity is of central importance in the university community and involves committed allegiance to the values, the principles, and the code of behavior held to be central in that community.  Integrity concerns honesty and implies being truthful, fair, and free from lies, fraud and deceit.

13. Disabled Student Services: CSUDH adheres to the American with Disabilities Act with respect to providing reasonable accommodations for students with temporary or permanent disabilities. To receive accommodations, students with disabilities must register with Disabled Student Services. For more information, please contact their office in Welch Hall B250 at (310) 243-3660.
